Converting Ubudu beacon to Eddystone format

A post on google developers blog ( mentions it is possible to convert an existing BLE beacon to Eddystone format (section "Eddystone for beacon manufacturers: Single hardware for multiple platforms").

Do you have any instructions on how to do this with Ubudu beacons? Is there a firmware update solution that workds with any BLE beacon or at least an Ubudu -specific firmware update?

Thanks and regards,

    Hi Paulo,

There is a requirement to do a firmware update to support the Eddystone format. What uBeacon version do you have uBeacon 2.0 ( the Mesh one) or the previous generation ?

    Best regards,

    Hello François,

I have just read beacon properties here using your iPhone app and it says:

    Model Number: uBeacon-USB
    Firmware Revision: 1.4.6
    Hardware Revision 1.4.3

    Does it help?

Ok clear. I’ll check out with the HW team what are the possibilities to upgrade the firmware for eddystone on these devices.
We have for now planned to update on our uBeacon 2.0 Mesh beacons which feature a a different BLE chip (CSR) than the one you have (Texas).
I’ll come back to you soon,

    Best regards,

    Hi François,

Have you been able to check if my uBeacon (Texas) will receive firmware update to be Eddystone-compatible ?

    Hi Francois

I had no clue what the Eddystone format - I came across an article and this would help solve some of my immediate issues.

As you know, I have the Mesh Beacons running Firmware 2.0.3 and Hardware 2.0.0.

I connected to my beacon tonight only to find there is nothing there for Eddystone format.

Is this something you are planning on releasing ?

    Hi Iain

So as you probably read in the article on Eddystone there are 3 types of advertising :
    - Eddsytone URL : which allows to broadcast an URL that can be read by Chrome
    - Eddystone UUID : which is a format similar to iBeacon .Functionally everything that can be done with Eddystone UUID can be done with the iBeacon format. iBeacon format has the advantage of being able to wake up an app on IOS which can be done by Eddystone UUID
    - Eddystone TLM : broadcast battery level, voltage, CPU temperature

We are releasing Eddystone URL beginning of September (maybe as early as next week) for uBeacon, the way we have implemented is quite cool as we are going to have both iBeacon and Eddystone URL working together so developers won’t have to choose one vs the other.

Eddystione UUID and Eddystone TLM : functionally it does not bring anything to our current offering. In particular for TLM it lacks some security features that seems important to us. So we did not prioritise these developments for now. We will add these formats as soon as we see clear benefits for our users.

What are the usage that you would like to implement using Eddystone format ? Why is it interesting in your eyes.

    Best regards,

    Hi Francois

Thanks for getting back to me.

What I read was that with the EddyStone URL, when you come close to the beacon using chrome as you mentioned - which may also be an issue for those users using IOS as most are good with just using Safari, is that you can be sent a notification without having the App installed - which I see as a big issue. So for example, you may have an App out on the store, person goes into the store, but cant take advantage of the offers, however, if they are sent a link with the notification to say go and download the App, you now have a chance.

I may be wrong, but this is my understanding of the Eddystone URL.

Looking forward to the upcoming changes both in Firmware and Dashboard.
